Where we help in packing and packaging

Tamper evidence – security seal

Sealing the closure with hot melt adhesive causes unmistakable damage on opening – the customer can immediately tell whether the packaging was intact. It is required in particular in pharmaceutical and food packaging.

What you're dealing with

  • Open or damaged packaging during transport leads to complaints and returned goods – the cause is a weak or uneven adhesive application on the box flaps.
  • Adhesive overflow outside the bond fouls the packaging and the conveyor, causes line stoppages and raises costs – precise cut-off and control of the application width are the basic conditions for a clean operation.
  • Different packaging formats, product changeovers and fluctuations in line speed make it hard to maintain a constant bond quality – the application system must respond to a format change instantly, with no downtime.

How Kaletech solves it

Robatech systems apply adhesive precisely to a defined spot – with an instant start and end of application (cut-off). Whether it is sealing boxes on a fast line, dot labelling or pallet stabilisation (anti-slip gluing), every configuration is designed for the specific parameters of the line: the type of packaging, the speed, the type of adhesive and the number of application points.

For packing operations we offer both hot melt systems (box sealing, tamper evidence, palletising) and cold gluing (wrap-around labelling, application onto heat-sensitive materials). The choice of technology is determined by the type of application – both approaches are covered by Robatech electric and pneumatic application heads with industrial communication via a PLC.

The Robatech Control System (RCS) control platform communicates with a higher-level PLC via Fieldbus (Profibus, Profinet) and monitors adhesive consumption in real time – a deviation from the norm signals a problem in the bond before a faulty package leaves the line.

How it works and what technology is used

Robatech technology for gluing and sealing packaging integrates a melter or a pumping unit, a hose and an application head into a controlled unit synchronised with the production line. For hot melt applications, the adhesive is melted in a compact or high-capacity melter, carried through a heated hose and applied by an application head with precise cut-off. For cold gluing, a dosing unit pumps the dispersion from a container and the Sempre application head doses it precisely. Robatech has both variants available (hot melt and cold gluing), used according to the application – hot melt for box sealing, cold glue on the labelling carousel.

  1. Selecting the technology and adhesive

Depending on the application, we choose hot melt or cold glue (dispersion). Hot melt for box sealing, tamper evidence and pallet stabilisation – instant setting keeps up the production pace. Cold dispersion adhesive for wrap-around labelling on glass, cans and PET – no heat stress on the label and minimal adhesive consumption per area.

  2. Melting or pumping the adhesive

The melter (Alpha for compact applications, MultiMelt or JumboFlex for high-capacity lines) melts the hot melt granules to the working viscosity. For cold glue, a dosing unit ensures a stable, pulsation-free supply of the dispersion. In both cases the result is a constant pressure and flow at the application head – the prerequisite for a repeatable application.

  3. Precise application with the application head

The SpeedStar Compact or Volta applies hot melt as dots or in a bead pattern onto the box flaps or the surface of the package. Sempre application heads precisely dose dispersion adhesive onto the surface of a moving label – a switching frequency of up to 500 Hz ensures a clean application even at the high speed of the labelling carousel.

  4. Control, monitoring and cut-off

The control system (PLC or RCS) synchronises the application with the movement of the package along the line. Adhesive is applied only where it should be – a start and stop response in milliseconds eliminates overflow. Real-time monitoring of adhesive consumption alerts the operators to a deviation from the set norm before a faulty package leaves the line.

„For such a complex and fast line we needed a partner who understands not only gluing but also the real operation of a production line. Kaletech delivered exactly what we expected. We appreciate that it does not approach a project with a ‚delivered – done' attitude, but actively comes up with proposals for further improvement."

Frequently asked questions

Wrap-around labelling is a technique in which the label wraps around the entire circumference of a bottle, can or PET package – from the beginning to the end of the adhesive bond. Dispersion adhesive is applied to both ends of the label: to the leading end (bonding to the package) and to the overlapping end (bonding the label to itself). The result is a strong, aesthetically clean bond with no air bubbles. Sempre application heads apply a precise amount of cold glue with no adhesive stringing, even at the high cycle rate of a labelling carousel.
